How to Speed up Ubuntu
Is your Ubuntu system running slow? Today, by just typing a few commands, you can make it faster.
IMPORTANT: This is an old guide so some of these instructions don't really work anymore (for instance, Ubuntu no longer has Unity). But I'm keeping it up because it might be helpful for anyone who is still running an older version of Ubuntu.
Open the Terminal and type these commands:
sudo -s
sysctl vm.swappiness=10
sudo swapoff -a
sudo swapon -a
sudo apt-get remove apt-xapian-index
cd /etc/xdg/autostart/
sudo sed --in-place 's/NoDisplay=true/NoDisplay=false/g' *.desktop
sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool
sudo apt-get install preload
NOTE: If you are seeing weird symbols please refer to http://pastebin.com/Rvwz6FT5
NOTE: When you do sudo sed, open the startup applications from the unity dash and disable stuff that you don't need.
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
Now open CCSM and open Unity plugin. Change it from active blur to no blur.
