Here's my thoughts on how to run a gladiator or combat tournament style adventure in OSR, D&D, or your TTPRG of choice. I think GMs get too aught up in focusing on the combat set-pieces in the arena at the expense of everything else. My advice is not to concentrate on the arena battles but on everything happening around the fighting. Look at movies and other media for inspiration. There is almost always plots and intrigues that are developed outside the fighting and they are sometimes the main movers of the story.
