What You Need To Know
According to a recent study, ancient people in central Mexico may have used seasonal landmarks in the region’s harsh topography to strategically plant food crops to feed their thriving population.
Researchers led by Exequiel Ezcurra, a plant ecologist at the University of California, Riverside, found evidence supporting the theory that the jagged peaks on the horizon of Mount Tlaloc were used to track the passage of time and adjust the agricultural calendar to coincide with the changing seasons.
Keep in mind that it is very warm and dry in the Mexico Valley in the spring. And in the late summer or early fall, there may be monsoons.
Therefore, crops need to be planted at extremely specific times due to the wet and dry annual cycle.
If not, the entire plantation may suffer.
Ezcurra says, and I quote –
“planting too early, following the cue of a first haphazard early rain, can be disastrous if the rainy season does not continue.”
“If you wait to plant your corn until the monsoon season has already begun, your harvest could be threatened by weeds and a shorter growth season.”
Besides the Aztecs, other cultures have relied on horizon indicators to track the Sun’s yearly path across the sky.
