The sounds of Saturn presented here were recorded by TRW and released in 1982. Scientist Dr. Fred Scarf and the research team from the University of Iowa, Dr. Don Gurnett and Dr. Bill Kurth. Scarf is principal investigator for the plasma wave experiment which is riding aboard the Voyager I and Il spacecraft as they journey through the solar system. The experiment measures electric field components of plasma waves in the vicinity of the planets. These sounds of charged particles were captured using simple audio recorders with the 30-foot spacecraft antennas acting as electric "microphones." Additional sounds from the region near Saturn's rings were reconstructed at TRW's Redondo Beach, California, facility using a terrestrial music synthesizer to process signals from audio filters on the Voyager spacecraft.
