Here's a video on how to connect and access a USB thumb drive to your Xiaomi Mi3 smartphone.
No rooting or any other procedure is necessary for gaining access to an external storage device from the Mi3 mobile device. All you need is an OTG cable and a USB drive. Upon connecting the OTG cable with the pendrive to the Xiaomi Mi3 smartphone, all content is automatically displayed in the explorer app of the smartphone.
You can access and edit a host of files from the pendrive like photos, movies, songs, documents. All without any need of a special software/software changes.
