The last few decades have seen the rise of powerful technology platforms that battle for our attention. Meanwhile, we face urgent social and environmental issues and seem unable to gather the collective will to address them. These challenges are directly related: our attention is drawn away from our collective interest and into echo chambers. As designers and technologists, we have a role to play in this existential dilemma: but what is it? I argue that we must remain optimistic in the face of challenge and draw on our great traditions of human insight and expression to draw voices together and unite for change.
