Biggest Bad Habits on the Violin (Common violin mistakes)
1. Banana Thumb - This means that the bow is stiff up against the bow instead of being curved and bent (it's huge to do this properly when you first learn to play violin).
2. Too Stiff of the Wrist - When students first learn violin, they often have bad violin habits related to the right wrist. Make sure you are bending the wrist (especially in the up-bow) to avoid this very common violin bad habit that causes violin bow tension.
3. Lazy Elbow Plane - Many students (adult violin beginner students especially), tend to have what I call lazy elbow. This means they don't move their elbow enough to change the plane of the violin bow. This leads to many violin beginner mistakes.
4. Now Using Enough Bow - If you are a violin noobie you can really relate to this concept. It's common to go through learning how to play the violin with not using enough bow. I cover this concept often through my beginner violin lessons.
5. Too Low of Knuckles - Many violin mistakes start with the left-hand. This is a very common bad habit (also emphasized by Allison Sparrow). Make sure you get your violin left-hand up higher (I talk about this in my violin beginner tutorial video that you hopefully watched above).
If you work on avoiding bad habits on the violin, you'll avoid many violin mistakes that will cause you to struggle as an adult violin beginner. I recommend watching this violin tutorial again so that you ensure you aren't going back to your old ways.
Hope you enjoyed the violin video and like my violin lessons thus far! Also, hope you are making some good progress. Violin mistakes take time to correct - try not to get frustrated though. Think positive, and learn how to play violin with the confidence that you will eventually see significant improvements (with practice).
