Frank Chapman - The Man Who Created the Christmas Bird Count
As one of the founders of the Christmas Bird Counts, Chapman helped transform the destructive Christmas Side Hunts - the competitive bird slaughter where all that flew were shot - into one of the most important bird conservation movements. His contribution to avian conservation continued through his explorations, research, prolific writing, and one of the leaders who helped end the bloody reign of the plume hunters. Chapman spent winters in Gainesville, and during that time, he surveyed and researched birds around Paynes Prairie. Chapman's Pond, an Alachua County Birding Hotspot, is named in honor of this influential ornithologist who helped pioneer bird conservation.
