The following are edit cuts of moments from the flooding in Canton, MS on 8/2/22. Water rescue by boats were conducted off MLK. Reported 8-10" of rain fell in a 6hr period.
Minor flooding in neighborhoods on southwest side of Peace Street with water up to the door steps.
Peace Street was closed when a car stalled. Businesses in this area had water inside. Props to the public works department employee with the umbrella-hat; he was first out there and clearing the drains of debris.
Major flooding on northwest side of Peace Street in the neighborhoods along Batchelor Creek with water in homes and cars submerged.
--Local Stories--
Several locals I encountered kept talking about Batchelor Creek and how for years they have asked the city to clean it up and remove the brush grown along the banks and inside the creek bed.
A local living in one of these communities even stated the Sheriff came out and was going to get the local officials to fix a drainage issue with the local storm drains in an older community on the north side of the square. Nothing ever happened of this and he showed me the drain which infact was moving water away.
One local drove through the water and his car was pushed off the road by the water. (audio recording in video)
An older gentleman who has been there all his life talked about they never had this issue until the city built an apartment complex several years ago and rerouted the creek to the north slowing the flow of the creek. I am unsure of the facts behind this but it was clear in the video that the creek did at one point come through an area by a newer looking set of apartments on higher ground and the creek did at that point turn north and go along the back side. Those apartments did not get water in them unlike the homes and older apartments along the creek.
