When we say wolves, the first thought that might come into your mind is of predatory, wild
animals, right? Well, they are so much more than that! Wolves have been known as dangerous
and wild but what most people tend to miss out on is that they have many other unique
characteristics. These animals are capable of creating social bonds, plus wait till you hear how
tall they usually are! Here are 10 facts you didn’t know about wolves. Number 1 will completely
shock you, son watch out for that!

10. Lifecycle

The lifecycle of wolves might leave you surprised. All of us expect a strong, wild, and dangerous
animal like a wolf to live a long and scary life full of adventures. Their lives might be
adventurous but they are never really long. On average, a wolf can live as much as 13 years.
Even cats live longer than that. When they are in captivity, they can live as long as 16 years, but
never more than that. A lot of times they tend to die because of their wild lifestyle. When they
get too weak, old, or injured they are hunted down and killed. Sometimes, wolves even die
because of the destruction of the habitat. Hunting for food and stay well-fed is also another
struggle for then. Some wolves tend to die out of starvation as well when they cannot find food
to eat for longer periods of time.

9. Senses
These wolves are highly sensitive to movement and sounds when they are hunting but you might
be surprised to find out that all wolf pups are born deaf and blind. They will need adult wolves to
look after them and care for them for a long, long time. The pup wolves will need someone to
look after them for as much as 10 months. For this 10 month time period, since they will be deaf
and blind, they will need someone to look after them, get them food, feed them ad fend them

from their enemies. But once they are all grown up, a wolf's hearing gets twenty times more
sensitive than a human being. As they grow up, their sense of smell heightens as well. Their
sense of smell is known to be a hundred times more accurate and sensitive as compared to a
human being.
8. Body Weight
These wild creatures are beautiful but they can be very, very scary when you see them up close.
Their teeth are sharp and scary, of course, but it is their height and weight that might surprise
you! On average, a wolf is as tall as a human being. Female wolves are usually 4.5 to 6 feet tall
while male wolves are 5 to 6.5 feet tall. Some of these wolves might be even taller than you!
With such a huge height frame, of course, they will be heavier than other animals as well. When
at birth, they weigh just 1 pound but as they gradually start to mature, they get huge. Female
wolves can weigh as much as 80 pounds while male wolves are even huger and can weigh as
much as 110 pounds! Imagine a 1 pound baby turning into 100 pounds in just a matter of a few
years! isnt that crazy!?
7. Howl Type
When we listen to wolves howl in the movies, all of them just sound the same, right? Well, that
is not the case! Wolves howl when they want to communicate with their pack. They greet each
other, fight, and send messages to each other through their howls. These howls are known to be
scary and loud. There are many different types of howls that send different messages. A wolf that
is alone might howl to gain the attention of their pack while other times a pack of wolves may
send communal howls to send a territorial message to another pack. But wait, this is not where it
ends. Rival packs might even respond to the calls and howl back sending different messages!

When a wolf chooses to separate itself from the pack, it will rarely howl. The howling of the
wolves might seem like casual barking to you but they are actually having conversations. They
even start howling when they spot another wolf in front of them. These howls are often used to
scare away unknown packs of wolves and humans as well! Talk about killing two birds with one
stone.
