Every day we take precautions to avoid being badly affected by terrible but highly unlikely events. We wear seat belts in our cars in the unlikely event of a car accident. We lock the front door of our house in the unlikely event of a robbery. We also receive warnings of thunderstorms when there's a risk of significant impacts from those storms, even if many places within the thunderstorm warning area won't receive a drop of rain. Why are thunderstorms so hit and miss and why is it important to warn people about them, even if they are not always guaranteed?
