Situated in the quiet town of Relay, Maryland, the Thomas Viaduct stands as one of America’s earliest railroad engineering achievements. Built between 1833 and 1835 for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O), this massive stone bridge has carried trains across the Patapsco River for nearly two centuries — making it the oldest multi-arched railroad bridge still in use today. From its daring 19th-century construction to its place in modern railroading, this structure remains a powerful symbol of American ingenuity and endurance.
In this video, I explore the history of Relay, MD, a small community born from the early days of the railroad, and take a closer look the structures that helped define it over the years, from historic stations to the bridge that has withstood the test of time. And I catch a number of modern trains passing through the area on dynamic drone footage!
