In March 1942, Douglas MacArthur fled the Philippines on a torpedo boat in the dark and made a promise: "I shall return." The Japanese general who forced him to make that promise — who drove 75,000 American and Filipino soldiers into surrender and unleashed the Bataan Death March — was Lieutenant General Masaharu Homma.
65 miles. No water. No food. Tens of thousands of American and Filipino POWs forced to march under brutal conditions. One of the worst war crimes ever committed against American soldiers in World War II.
MacArthur returned in 1944. He kept every word of his promise.
This is the story of what happened to the Japanese general who started it all — his rise, his victory, his trial, and his execution. A forgotten chapter of World War II history that every American should know.
If your father or grandfather served in the Pacific, leave his name in the comments. Don't let their stories disappear.
