Understanding the 2024 FAFSA Delay
FAFSA Update Alert!
Here's the latest on the FAFSA: The new and improved FAFSA form launched about a month ago, but the distribution of student data to colleges has been delayed from the end of January to March.
Why the delay? It turns out the Department forgot to update some important tables for calculating eligibility in regards to inflation, so now they need to crunch some more numbers before releasing anything.
It’s also important to know that if you've already submitted your FAFSA, you can't make any changes until March!
So what's the takeaway? Get your FAFSA done, but be prepared for delays of financial aid information. This is putting a ton of stress on colleges, financial aid offices, and of course, students and families.
Some schools, like Oregon State, are already pushing back their commitment dates to June 1 to give everyone more time to make educated decisions. While this new and improved form was designed to better support low-income students, experts expect these delays to discourage those students from enrolling this year.
