How to Configure and Use Control Center in macOS 11 Big Sur
Hi Guys, Brandon here from Brandon Tech Talk. Today, I shall show you how to use and how to configure the new feature "Control Center" in the brand new Operating System, macOS Big Sur.
MacOS has since long provided quick access to certain system settings in the menu bar, but when you have lots of these menu extras, your menu bar can get cluttered. iOS for iPhones and iPads offers a different way to access these settings, such as volume, brightness, and toggling Bluetooth and wi-fi and that is called the "Control Center".
MacOS Big Sur brings a similar "Control Center" to the Mac. With one click, you can display a panel containing buttons and slideras that you can use to adjust and toggle certain system settings. Here’s how to set up and use Control Center in macOS Big Sur. I'll show it to you on my MacBook Pro.
The right side of the menu bar displays menu item icons that are part of macOS or that are installed by third-party apps. There’s a volume menu item, there’s one for wi-fi, and there’s one showing the time. You can have third-party apps that install menu extras that display information or give me access to certain apps.
My menu bar has a lot of menu extras and sometimes it can be a bit messy. It looks something like this :
MacOS Big Sur simplifies managing a lot of tasks with induction of Control Center, which can hold many buttons and sliders. To display it, click the Control Center icon. Control Center displays with its palette of sliders and buttons.
By default, Control Center contains controls for some of the basic features on the Mac. For example, if you click the blue circular icons, you can toggle Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and AirDrop, and if you click on the small right arrow when you hover over the area, you open more controls for each of these services are shown. For example, click Wi-Fi to see options for different Wi-Fi networks.
You can also see, at the bottom of the palette that you can quickly open the Network pane of System Preferences.
I find controlling the brightness of the screen and the loudness sliders very useful. They are really handy.
If you expand the sound menu, you get to see all the available options. You can click on the internal speakers for the sound from the internal speakers of the computer. You can click on Apple TV and the sound shall come from the audio system connected. So, it is extremely handy.
To return to the main Control Center palette again, click the Control Center icon in the menu bar; to dismiss the Control Centre Pop-Up, click anywhere else.
Now let's talk about Customizing the Control Center.
To customize the Control Center, go to the System Preferences and then to the Dock & Menu Bar pane, where you’ll see options for the Dock, together with a list of Control Center options.
There are a many modules that work with Control Center and at the bottom of the list, you can also choose whether you want Clock, Spotlight, Siri, and Time Machine to display in the menu bar. They can't be displayed in the Control Center. For example you can choose to display the clock on the menu bar at the top. In addition, you can adjust the way the clock displays.
The nine top modules in the list are always visible in Control Center, but you can choose whether you want to display them in the menu bar or not. For some of these, you can set them to only display in the menu bar when active or always. For example, in the case of Do Not Disturb.
While Control Center helps you organize system menu extras, it still doesn’t help if you have lots of third-party icons in your menubar. For that you still need to use third party applications like Bartender, which can mange your Menu Bar items superbly.
