An air conditioner (AC) in heat mode essentially reverses the process it uses in cool mode, thanks to a component called a reversing valve. Here's a breakdown of how it works in both modes:

1. Cooling Mode
In cooling mode, the AC removes heat from indoor air and releases it outside:

Evaporator Coil (Inside Unit): The AC draws warm indoor air over the evaporator coil, which contains cold refrigerant. The refrigerant absorbs heat, cooling the air, and sends the now-cool air back into the room.
Compressor and Condenser Coil (Outside Unit): The refrigerant, now warmer, is sent to the compressor and then to the condenser coil outside. The refrigerant releases its heat into the outdoor air, returning to a colder, lower-pressure state to repeat the cycle.
2. Heating Mode
In heat mode, the AC’s refrigerant flow is reversed to absorb heat from outside and release it indoors:

Reversing Valve: This valve changes the direction of refrigerant flow, turning the AC into a heat pump.
Evaporator Coil (Outside) and Condenser Coil (Inside): Now, the outside coil acts as the evaporator, absorbing heat from the outside air, while the indoor coil functions as the condenser, releasing this heat inside.
Even in cold weather, there is still some heat in outdoor air for the refrigerant to absorb. However, when it gets extremely cold, the heat pump may become less effective, so some systems have supplemental heating elements.
