We are so delighted to release our very first original Irish song, written by our very own Jimmy Johnston, and arranged by Jimmy and Matthew.

‘Mary’ is the sweetheart of the man leaving and he burdens her with all the reasons for his departure, including the request that she tell his mother he is leaving.

‘Mary’ is an emigration song rather than the typical immigration song. It’s an honest and open revelation of a young man’s reasons for leaving his hometown of Larne in the northern province of Ireland, Ulster.

The song references “The Friends’ Goodwill”, which was the first passenger ship to leave Ulster and successfully travel to America in 1717. The Ulster-Scots or Scotch Irish emigrants onboard limped into Boston harbour over three and a half months after leaving Larne and were made known that they were less than welcome by those in the city.

Ultimately, it’s the story of a man who hates himself and feels the best thing he can do for Mary and himself is to start a new life apart and far away but he prays that she finds new love.
