[Eng Sub] The Land of no Oppa
North Korean law forbids the term “oppa”, Korean word for a female's “older brother) but has evolved over the years with a connotation that describes one’s admiration for a celebrity, most likely an older, male K-Pop idol; even if the word is in Korean, South Korean way of speaking (jargon) is banned and punishable by law. The BTS Army, a boy K-pop fanbase, or other K-pop fans from all around the world frequently use the word “oppa,” but the North Koreans are punished even for saying it. Even the act of mimicking the jargon from South Korean dramas or popular slang is prosecutable. Furthermore, this very law mitigates the cultivation of the Pyeongyang dialect, which is seen as more admirable than other countryside accents within the DPRK itself.
