A Few Additions:
Especially for metal-framed RPDs, distal extension cases have two alternatives. The first, as I explained in the video, is a clasp assembly with a rest on the mesial side of the abutment (RPI RPA) to shift the fulcrum. This is the clasp assembly of choice. However, there are certain situations where this type of clasp is contraindicated. For example:
1. If the vestibule depth is insufficient to accommodate the horizontal portion of the RPI clasp (i.e., the "horizontal arm" that ends up as the retentive arm).
2. If there is a soft tissue undercut.
In these RPDs, the clasp with a mesial rest can be replaced with a combination clasp, a clasp with a retentive arm made of wrought wire (wire used in acrylic). With this material, lever movement is not prevented, but the retentive arm is flexible, minimizing damage caused by lever movement.
Conclusion: In cases of RPI & RPA, the RPI & RPA clasp assembly remains the clasp assembly of choice if conditions permit, and a combination clasp is an alternative if RPI & RPA are not feasible.
Hopefully, this video is helpful. :) I recommend that if you're new to prosthodontics, before watching this, read about the Kennedy classification and prosthodontic terms like abutment, retainer, etc. Keep up the good work, Brainy Pandas, and happy learning! :D
