Today I'm sharing my LASIK eye surgery experience with Dr. Rudd and Aurora Lasik from December 2022. I just had LASIK to correct my vision and I already have 20/15 vision after less than 24 hours.

WARNING: This video features a few clips from my actual surgery at 10:07. If you don't want to see this, please skip to 15:42 once you reach that part (there is a warning on screen).

I had LASIK on December 1, 2022 after many years of wearing glasses and contact lenses. I was very nervous about the procedure, having researched potential side effects, but I knew this was the best time to get it done. I had a healthcare allowance through an HRA that I had to use by the end of the year, and LASIK was a way to do that.

Before LASIK I had a -4 power in my right eye and a -4.75 power in my left eye. I also had an astigmatism in each eye.

The team at Aurora Lasik had me start taking eye drops 2 weeks before, as I already have very dry eyes. I also started taking fish oil supplements. I also had to stop wearing contact lenses during this period.

The surgery itself went well! It took 10 minutes and they filmed the entire thing for me. I've included part of this in the video. I didn't find it uncomfortable or painful, but I also know that as a contact lens wearer I wasn't bothered by things being close to my eyes. By the time they sat me up I could see the clock outside the glass where my dad was viewing the procedure, which I never would have been able to see before.

By the time I got home I had halos around all lights and my eyes were super sensitive, so I wore sunglasses indoors. I ate dinner and then took my prescribed eye drops. They recommended taking a nap, so I did. When I awoke two hours later, my eyes felt fine and I could see!

On December 2, 2022 I had my first post-op appointment and they said everything looks perfect. I'm seeing 20/15 already. I still have some light sensitivity and halos around lights, but it seems to have improved.

I'll keep you all updated, but I'm so happy to be seeing so clearly without contacts or glasses!

► LASIK FAQs:
1. I have a mild prescription. Is surgery worth it?
This is up to you! Obviously, you won't see as many benefits as someone with a higher prescription, but that doesn't mean you can't get it done or enjoy the results. You'll just have to do the research and decide for yourself.

2. I wear contacts. How long do I need to stop wearing them before surgery?
I am not a medical professional, but I was told to stop wearing my soft contact lenses for at least 7 days prior to the free consultation and 7 days prior to surgery.

3. Does LASIK hurt?
I can only speak to my experience, but it was painless! I haven't felt any pain, even almost 48 hours after. I did experience some discomfort about an hour after surgery, but after taking a 2 hour nap as they suggested I felt fine. Discomfort due to dry eye can usually be resolved with eye drops.

4. Can I drive home after surgery?
No. I was sensitive to light and my vision was blurry for the first 1-3 hours after surgery. Please have someone drive you.

5. Can I go back to work or use a computer after surgery?
You shouldn't for the first day, as your eyes are very sensitive to light. However, in my experience, I was able to look at screens and read without issue the next day. This probably differs from person to person!
