"Only a madman could have painted this," wrote Edvard Munch on the back of "The Scream." The artist's own explanation of the painting is as follows: "I was sick and tired, and I stood looking out over the fjord. The sun was setting, the clouds were tinged red, like blood, and suddenly I felt as if a shriek were piercing through nature; I thought I heard a scream, I painted that image, I painted the clouds like real blood. The colors were screaming..."
