Enjoy history and learn how the ancient Romans liked blondes. In this short we explore how the ancient Romans came to have blonde envy after being exposed to the northern Germanic and Scandinavian tribes following Julius Caesar's conquests.

Even the ancient Romans had a thing for blondes. You see, the ancient Romans used to have dark brown hair and initially preferred it that way. Blonde hair was associated with the people of Gaul and the Germanic tribes whom the Romans considered barbarians. Even the law required that prostitutes be blonde. It was not until Rome conquered the countries of northern Europe in the 1st century BC. C. that mixed cultures and light-colored hair became fashionable. Noblewomen began wearing wigs made from the naturally blonde hair of the Germanic and Scandinavian peoples, and blonde hair quickly became a long-lasting fashion trend. Roman women, and some men, soaked their hair in a mixture of bleaching agents and dyes made from goat fat, beech wood ashes, plants, and nuts and soaked it in the sun to lighten their hair. Wealthier people even sprinkled their hair with real gold dust to create a blonde look.
