Blueprint against the Marshall Defense (1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nf6?!) | Climbing the Rating Ladder vs. 1286
In this continuation of the "Climbing the Rating Ladder" series I take on players of various ratings levels while pointing out typical mistakes and spots for improvement along the way (possibly my own!? :)). Here I commentate a 10+5 game against a player rated 1286 on Chess.com. The Marshall Defense (1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nf6?!) makes frequent appearances below 2200 despite long being regarded as dubious. The issue for Black is that after 3.cxd5, Black can only recover the pawn by capturing with a piece. This allows White to build a powerful d4+e4 pawn duo (beware of playing e2-e4 too quickly, though!), when the first player ought to enjoy a comfortable advantage.
