Generally, a box plot graphically displays several different location and dispersion measures in one chart.

The box is the so-called interquartile range (measure of dispersion) and represents the range spanned by the third quartile minus the first quartile. The median is located in the center of the box. The antennae typically represent the minimum and maximum values of a distribution, unless they are outliers. In this video, I show what outliers are, how to identify them, and how the box plot handles them.
Boxplots provide a very compact graphical representation of a distribution and its most important parameters.
