when talking about FX on the SP404, what comes to mind first? most people would say vinyl sim and compressor. and it makes sense. after all, those two FX almost singlehandedly defined the entire genre of lofi hip hop.
today, we’re not talking about those two. no. they don’t need any more praise! instead, we’re gonna turn our focus on two more FX that, in my opinion, are not being used enough.
the first one is scatter. most people perceived it as just as kind of a gimmick, like the D-Beam was before that (lol, remember that? )
the problem with scatter is that, especially if you look at that dumb old knob on the tr8, it was always presented as a “live performance” fx, but to me, that’s not the best use of it. it’s not a subtle effect, no matter what preset you use, so especially if you use it on your full mix, it’s very much on the nose and it gets old fast. imho, the best way to actually use it is on single instruments and in small doses.
the second effect is slicer. I don’t know what to say. I love slicer. I love gate effects, and this is no different!
