A detailed review of the Mi-4AV in War Thunder – the first helicopter in the USSR research tree
In War Thunder, the Mi-4AV pilot in combined battles, where the primary target is enemy ground vehicles, should first pay attention to the presence of an anti-aircraft gun or infantry fighting vehicle on the enemy team. This is a priority target and must be destroyed from a safe distance with an ATGM. Afterwards, you can fly closer to the battlefield and quickly destroy the remaining enemies. It's important to remember two things. First, the helicopter's yaw rate is very poor, so you need to select a target and lead it well in advance, otherwise you won't be able to correct the angle. Second, due to the nose engine's position, the angle of attack is very low, and a high pitch can cause the helicopter to pitch forward. Simply put, if you lean too far forward while aiming at an enemy, it will be impossible to turn back. The Mi-4AV is a good support helicopter. By carefully studying the map or the battlefield situation, it's better to assist an ally in a firefight, thereby avoiding the enemy's full attention.
The Mi-4 is a Soviet multirole helicopter of the early 1950s, one of the first mass-produced Soviet multirole helicopters. This helicopter was used in both civil and military aviation, earning a good reputation for its reliability and high load capacity. It was produced until 1979, and even after production ceased, many helicopters continued to be used worldwide, with the model's overall lifespan eventually exceeding 50 years. However, despite its impressive service life, the Mi-4 was rarely used in actual combat, with the exception of a few episodes during the Cold War.
The Mi-4AV version (Mi-4A is the basic modification, the "B" index stands for armed) was equipped with the same weapons system as the Mi-24A, allowing the helicopter to carry up to four 9M17M Falanga ATGMs, six S-5 unguided rocket pods, or aerial bombs. A 12.7mm A-12.7 machine gun was also mounted in the helicopter's ventral gondola. About 200 helicopters were converted to the Mi-4AV variant in the USSR.
