The M6A2E1 is an experimental American heavy tank based on the M6A1. With the appearance of the newest German Tiger II tanks on the battlefield, the American Army faced a shortage of suitable countermeasures. They urgently needed a new vehicle that could effectively combat German tanks and fortifications. General Electric developed such a design, proposing to equip the canceled M6/T1 heavy tank project with the new 105mm T5E1 gun, developed for the T28 super-heavy tank destroyer. A new turret was developed specifically for this purpose, and the hull was significantly modified to meet the new requirements. For example, the designers decided to remove the driver's front hatch and the bow machine gun, as they would reduce the stability of the frontal armor plate. They also decided to weld armored skirts onto the front hull, increasing the armor thickness to a full 190 mm. However, this work increased the vehicle's weight from 57 to 77 tons, significantly reducing its cross-country performance. This did not satisfy the military, and on August 22, 1944, the heavy tank conversion program was canceled.
