Heather Ridge frames the skyline directly north of the Stevens Pass ski area, with Skyline Lake nestled below it. To reach the lake, you take a communications tower service road that climbs over 1,000 feet in one mile, followed by a short trail to Skyline Lake. This section of the route is primarily used in the winter and is typically accessed with snowshoes or skis. Most people stop and turn around at the lake. However, if you're seeking more adventure and better views, a faint trail starts from a small campsite on the west side of the lake and leads to the top of Heather Ridge. Here, you'll navigate gigantic, house-sized boulders precariously balanced on one another. The best route skirts most of these rocks to the right, where you'll encounter a few short class 2-3 scrambling sections. The panoramic view from the top is breathtaking, with rugged peaks in all directions. Overall, the unique rock formations and the stunning views make the effort well worth it.
