What is Borderline Personality Disorder? - In this video, Mindful Space host Michelle Chaffardet discusses the symptoms and causes of borderline personality disorder (BPD) as well as effective treatment options and medication.

BPD is defined as a personality disorder characterized by severe mood swings, impulsive behavior, and difficulty forming stable personal relationships. Roughly 1.3% of Americans are diagnosed with a borderline personality disorder.

This disorder can have a significant impact on one's life. BPD can impact your self-image and the way you handle emotions and can also play a role in creating a pattern of unstable relationships. That is why it is important for individuals with borderline personality and those around them to have a solid understanding of the disorder.

There are two primary causes of borderline personality disorder including genetics and experiencing a traumatic event such as abuse or a severe accident.

A few symptoms of BPD include:

Experiencing an intense fear of abandonment, as much as going to extreme measures to avoid real or imagined separation or rejection.

Periods of stress-related paranoia and loss of contact with reality, lasting from a few minutes to a few hours

Participating in impulsive activities such as gambling, reckless driving, unsafe sex, spending sprees, binge eating or drug abuse, or sabotaging success by suddenly quitting a good job or ending a positive relationship

Intense mood swings lasting from a few hours to a few days, which can include intense happiness, irritability, shame, or anxiety

Experiencing ongoing feelings of emptiness

Fortunately, there are plenty of treatment options available to patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

The standard option to treat borderline personality disorder symptoms is a mix of psychotherapy and medication.

Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, aims to increase emotional control and distress tolerance.

One example of this type of therapy is Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT.

Dialectical therapy is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which is a type of talk therapy that helps people understand how thoughts affect emotions and behaviors.

Even after treatment, life with BPD can be a challenge.

A few tips for living with and coping with BPD include speaking with someone you trust about how you feel, focusing on your mental and physical health, anticipating and making a plan for your bad days, finding things that bring you joy or help you to relax, and do not suppress your negative emotions; identify and address them.

You can also try doing things at home such as meditation and even something as small as making sure you get enough sleep at night.

That means reducing rage, self-destructive behaviors, mood swings, and impulsiveness.

This video will highlight everything you need to know about borderline personality disorder, including causes, symptoms, and even treatment.
