"The Sphinx's Apple" is a short story by American writer O. Henry. It was first published in 1903. It is part of the collection "Heart of the West," 1907. Originally titled "The Sphinx Apple." Other titles: "The Sphinx and the Apple," "The Original Contest."
Due to snowdrifts, passengers on a stagecoach are forced to spend the night in an abandoned hut. From the coachman, they hear a romantic story about an old hermit who lived there not long ago.
