In 1914, the Japanese steamship Komagata Maru, carrying 376 passengers from British India, arrived in Vancouver, Canada. These passengers, primarily Sikhs, along with some Muslims and Hindus, faced harsh immigration laws that denied them entry. Despite being British subjects, only 24 passengers were allowed to disembark, while the rest were forced to return to India.
Upon their return to Budge Budge near Calcutta (now Kolkata), they were met with vio+lnence from the British Indian police, resulting in several de+ths. This incident highlighted the racial prejudices of the time and became a significant chapter in the Indian independence movement.
