NASA conducts a successful full-duration RS-25 engine test on the A-1 Test Stand at Stennis Space Center, near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, on Oct. 31, 2018. NASA is testing RS-25 engines at Stennis to help power launches of the new Space Launch System (SLS) rocket on missions to the Moon and, eventually, Mars. The Oct. 31 test marked an acceptance hot fire of an RS-25 engine controller for use on a future SLS flight. The new flight controller serves as the RS-25 “brain,” helping the engine communicate with the rocket and controlling engine operation and internal health diagnostics.
