Building an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) or garage conversion is shrouded in mystery and confusion.
I asked Winston Bodkin, owner of @casita_adu to break down the steps. In this video, we cover the initial phase of getting a permit.
𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟏: 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲
Every project begins with a Feasibility Study to understand what your local building codes and zoning regulations will allow.
𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟐: 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞
Architects bring your vision to life. They will develop floorplans, consider structural elements and ensure compliance with Title 24 energy efficiency standards.
𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟑: 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐦𝐢𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐬
Once finalized, the complete plans are submitted to your local city or county building department for approval.
𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟒: 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐬
After submitting your plans, fees will be calculated by the building department. After paying the required fees, your plans will be reviewed by the building department to ensure all requirements are met.

Once your plans are approved, you’ll receive the permit to begin construction.
Stay tuned for the next video in this ADU series.
