Speech Craft Challenge
This is the activity that brings the art of speaking, reading, and thinking together in one place. You need to take both pros and cons into consideration while getting ready for the stage as you’ll be required to defend either the negative or the positive side of the argument.
Guidelines
Participants will have 7 minutes to prepare for their topics before the speeches start.
One after another, team members speak in front of a team of judges to demonstrate their persuasive speaking skills.
Speeches shall not be less than a minute and more than three minutes in length; you may use cue cards, notes and papers if you wish.
You are ordered randomly before the challenge starts and teams stay in the rooms during this challenge even though they are waiting for their turn.
Whilst teams are waiting in the room, they will receive their allocated topic.
Time commences when the speaker begins talking.
The maximum time limit for each speech is three minutes. The minimum time limit is 60 seconds.
Contestants are penalized on each judge’s scoring sheet for being over three minutes or under 60 seconds.
The head judge will show “30 SECONDS LEFT” sign on the 150th second.
No speaker may be coached or prompted in any manner during the presentation.
The other contestants as audiences are welcome in the room since our events are meant to be educational.
Audiences should be instructed to remain seated and quiet during all presentations.
Audience courtesy should be extended at all times.
You need to use your time and words wisely; it’s not about talking for a long time but talking to convince the audience and judges!
Scoring Criteria
Content (40%): Resources, Empirical Evidence, Creativity and Originality
Organisation (30%): Structure, Rebuttal and Cohesion
Delivery (30%): Gesticulation, Language and Local Variety
