Change Healthcare Incident Costs $700M

A February 2024 ransomware attack on UnitedHealth Group’s subsidiary, Change Healthcare, exposed the personal information of roughly 100 million people, making it the largest healthcare data breach in U.S. history. This incident, attributed to the ALPHV (BlackCat) ransomware group, compromised sensitive data, including Social Security numbers, health records, and insurance information. The breach, affecting nearly a third of the U.S. population, led to significant disruptions across the healthcare system, impacting patient care and financial transactions for months. UnitedHealth has been notifying those affected and faces several lawsuits and investigations as the fallout continues.
