How can you fight cancer and still have fun? In Manhattan Beach, CA, the Tour de Pier is an annual event that benefits three different cancer research organizations: the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, the Uncle Kory Foundation for Brain Cancer and the Cancer Support Community of Redondo Beach.

Although participants may have been stationary Spinner® bikes, the mission of Tour de Pier is “moving charity forward”. For many people, especially cancer patients in recovery who cannot lift, run or handle too much physical stress, “Spinning® is a gift,” says Ryan Myerson, a rider for the early 9:00 AM ride. “The Spinner bike is there for them as a release or exercise, whether they’re looking for a mental release or getting back in shape.”

This year, Tour de Pier raised over $877,000 for cancer research, surpassing their goal. Some of the returning riders came back as cancer survivors who are now in remission.

When you ride, you give hope for others who are “still fighting and winning the battle,” says Ryan, and you’ll be inspired by them. So gather your team, grab your costume and reserve your bike for next year to continue the fight against cancer.
