Djindjic-Del Ponte Lugano Secret Meeting
"A few days later Prime Minister Djindjic called me and asked for a secret meeting. I suggested we get together on March 3rd (2001) in Lugano, at the end of the week.
Thursday afternoon Djindjic and his wife Ruzica landed in Lugano. I met them at the airport and suggested Ruzica to take a walk around the city and take advantage of sales.
As soon as she left, Djindjic and I went to the cantonal police chief's office. Being vigorous and dashing as he was, he was not wasting time in Lugano. We spent two hours discussing, in German, Serbia and her difficulties. Djindjic said Milosevic was still in charge of the Socialist party of Serbia trying to survive politically as the head of the opposition. He's aware that Milosevic has to be neutralized and explains that he needs the assistance of the United States, which halted the economic aid meant for Serbia. The aid is conditioned by cooperation with the Tribunal and, Djindjic says, Kostunica hampers the cooperation but the new bill on the cooperation with the tribunal may not be adopted before the Washington set deadline."
