The Discord Loading Image scam explained (poorly)
Normally I don't feel something like this warrants such an in-depth explanation beyond "Don't enter your password into obvious phishing sites" but thanks to a certain tweet riddled with misinformation and scaremongering I feel it's necessary to help calm people's nerves and explain this in a very layman's fashion.
A few technicalities or things to note:
1. The files aren't necessarily stored on the CDN servers themselves, but rather a separate storage server that the CDN servers then link to.
2. The URL for files hosted on Discord servers might not always say CDN in the URL. For example, sometimes they say "media" instead.
3. Even if it's likely that there's no danger in actually visiting the phishing page, please don't do it on purpose. I'm not responsible if you do. I'm only telling you it's not likely dangerous so you don't panic if you initially fall for the scam but realize after you get redirected to the login page. Just close the page (and maybe do a virus/malware scan to be sure) and report the message.
4. I asked a good handful of people (most of whom are tech-savvy and some even work IT-related fields) what the "View original" button did. All of them said it "opened the file in your browser". So even if you're gigabrained enough to know better, it's safe to assume most people think this.
5. During the making of this video, I told a friend that I was making a video about scam urls, and then posted the fake scam url I used in the video. He opened it without even being asked to. And then blamed me. You know who you are.
6. I was incorrect in how Discord generates embeds. They're defined by the website itself, not "created" by discord. Fortunately it's not vital to understand how embeds are generated to understand this scam. Thanks to everyone in the comments that pointed this out!
