Artificial intelligence (AI) is currently generating considerable interest, and its rapid advances are generating much excitement. A dilemma arises as to whether intelligent systems designed within AI can be created without regard to human needs, expectations, or values.

In this lecture from the "Closer to Science" series, Professor Grzegorz J. Nalepa and I explore this topic, briefly reviewing the history of AI and its interdisciplinary origins, and highlighting the most important areas of AI development and application.

We also focus on human understanding of AI's operation in selected aspects and situations, as well as on the creation of AI systems that collaborate with humans (human-centered AI).

"Closer to Science" is a series of popular science lectures organized at the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy, and Applied Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.
