This video is dedicated to covering two of the most spectacular of these sites: Cocos Island National Park and Islas Murcielago (Bat Islands).

When people think of wild Costa Rica, what they are typically imagining are large wet forests -- places like Monteverde, Corcovado and Tortuguero. What is less talked about, though certainly not unknown in global diving circles, is Costa Rica's fantastic offshore diving opportunities.

Two of these amazing sites: Cocos Island National Park and Islas Murcielago (Bat Islands). Isolated, uninhabited islands and rock outcroppings that are home to some of the Pacific Coast of Central America's largest stretches of coral reef, magnets for large pelagics like whale sharks, tiger sharks, manta rays, tuna, marlin, jacks, and scalloped hammerhead sharks.

In a country where land-based excursions and nature and wildlife tourism are so thoroughly commercialized and commodified, it can take some work to find a truly wild Costa Rica experience. Places like Cocos Island National Park and the Bat Islands of the Nicoya Peninsula offer those interested in Costa Rica's marine ecosystems opportunities to experience some of the most abundant and impressive patches of the Tropical Eastern Pacific.
