It was very unfortunate that this happened..
But when Ollie was little, he got a nail bed infection and we took him to the vet to get it cured. After that visit however, we noticed he now hated getting his paws touched/nails trimmed. We were really bummed because ever since he was weeks old, still at his breeder’s, she had exposed him to the dremmel and other grooming tools, and we continued that exposure after we brought him home. It was never a problem until he got his infection. ☹️
This is an issue we are slowly working on, and I hope to one day be able to dremmel his nails stress-free. But in the mean time, I love finding new, creative ways to keep his nails trim. And I love to share what I’m currently trying out with other pet parents that may be going through the same thing!
FAQ’s about the Scratch Board:
1. Will this harm their paw pads?
In my experience, Ollie naturally flexes his toes when he scratches down on the board, so the pads don’t really make contact with the sand paper. Most dogs will naturally do this. Either way, make sure you use low grit sand paper, but you’ll see the texture is not much different than if they were touching it to a road or something
2. What about the back paws?
The scratch board honestly works best for front paws because it will require a lot more effort for your dog to learn to scratch its back paws. But I definitely don’t think it’s impossible for a dog to learn that. It’s just teaching the motion of kicking their legs, kinda like that lil kick after they go to the bathroom. Luckily for us though, Ollie gives us less trouble when clipping his back paws than the front, we we will just tackle those with the clippers.
Remember to always do what is best for YOUR dog. You know them better than anyone else!
