Wiegenlied (Brahms’ Lullabye or Cradle Song) by Johannes Brahms
A popular classical song to sing, Johannes Brahms's "Wiegenlied: Guten Abend, gute Nacht" ("Good evening, good night"), Op. 49, No. 4, was published in 1868 and was first performed in public on December 22, 1869 in Vienna. Although sung throughout the year, the words “Christkindleins Baum” or “Christ-child’s tree” evokes the holiday season. Brahms dedicated this lullabye to his friend, Bertha Faber, after she gave birth to her second son. It is said that he had been in love with her and the melody he used in this song was inspired by a song she used to sing to him in their youth.
I used to sing this lullabye to my son every night at bedtime after we processed his day and I helped him wind down for the evening. He grew to associate “Wiegenlied” with the comfort and warmth of his mother’s love. As we end 2023, I wish for children of all ages to feel loved. Love is such a powerful energy of protection that cannot be forgotten.
