No time for pleasantries - lets get straight down to doing the following.

1) Connect to an existing launched default ubuntu instance on AWS.
2) Customise, update kernel, patch programs including defending
against Shell Shock and Bash Bug vulnerabilities.
3) Save modified Ubuntu instance as one of your own AMIs.
4) Launch and verify your customised Ubuntu AMI has retained changed made.

Commands used in this video

This demonstration connects to an EC2 instance from the command line of a macbook,
steps also applicable to any linux computer with openSSH installed.
