Bhagavadajjukam (c. 7th century CE) is a popular prahasana (humorous play, satire; one of the ten genres of Sanskrit drama) attributed variously to Bodhāyana and King Pallava Mahendravarma. For the first time, it is presented using the original text (in Sanskrit and Prakrit). The artistic aspects of the pūrvaraṅga are reconstructed as per Nāṭyaśāstra guidelines. Stage design, costumes, music, movements, enactment, and all other features are in accordance with Sage Bharata’s vision.
Bhagavadajjukam depicts a fantastical episode of the exchange of bodies of a stern ascetic and a beautiful courtesan. It portrays the shortcomings of bookish learning without experiential wisdom and romantic love that does not look beyond the skin. While comical in presentation, it opens our minds to profound introspection.
