In the late 1960's, if you wanted to listen to music on the go, you didn't have many options. Sure, you had a transistor radio, but you were locked into whatever the DJ wanted to play. Introduce the Playtape! Now YOU were the DJ. This forgotten format was based on a 2-track endless loop analog tape cartridge that could be either mono or stereo. The 8-track was still on the horizon and the compact cassette tape was still in its infancy. The Playtape was a huge success when it was introduced, with over 3000 artists signing up to release their music on the format.
