Vincent Vanlaer - "Beyond a simple line: asteroseismic modelling techniques for the future" (IvS seminar 23/05/2024)
Abstract: Stellar evolution presents a complicated challenge, with gaps in our knowledge affecting many aspects of astronomy. Luckily, space telescopes like Kepler and TESS give us light curves for millions of objects. By studying the pulsating stars among these, we have to opportunity to probe the internal structure and evolution of stars, for various masses and evolutionary stages. However, just having access to these large datasets and their observational diagnostics is not sufficient: the modelling techniques and the stellar models themselves need to be sufficiently advanced and efficient to exploit the data maximally.
In this seminar I will present what kind of techniques we are developing to tackle these problems. I will mainly focus on our ongoing work on structure inversions for g-mode pulsators, and the application of rotation inversions and magnetic modelling to the beta-Cepheid pulsator HD 192575.
