Is the /r/ sound hard for you in American English? You are not the only one! In this video, I teach the Vocalic /r/ in the same way that I would teach it in a one-on-one lesson. I begin by going through a list of /r/ sounds to better pin point where the main problems is. There are people that struggle with all of the sounds and others that have a hard time with only one. Understanding what you struggle with is the first step to improving it!

To get the correct vocalic /r/ sounds, the tongue tip is down and the back of the tongue is bunched at the back of your throat. This helps us stay away from the ‘relaxed’ /r/ sounds and focus more on tightening it up. In this video I use the word “red” at the end of various words to get the desired sound we are looking for. Many times it takes saying the word five times to get it right!

It may feel weird at first but practice makes perfect! Becoming aware of the right way to say it and how you are actually saying it will help you correct it. Play with the various sounds and the mouth and tongue movements and eventually you will get it right. Pay attention to how it feels and practice it over and over again. This video is a great way to get started!
