The Nightingale and the Rose - Oscar Wilde
A short story written by Oscar Wilde, published in "The Happy Prince and Other Tales" along with four other stories by the author in 1888, and considered the most celebrated.
The story is about a young student in love with a girl, the daughter of his teacher, who needed a red rose to impress her, but only white roses grew in her garden. A nightingale saw him and, moved by the idea that the young man might find true love, decided to sacrifice its life so that a red rose might bloom.
