The Yavuz Selim Mosque, also known as the Selim I Mosque and the Yavuz Sultan Selim Mosque, is a 16th-century Ottoman imperial mosque located atop Istanbul's Fifth Hill. It contains the tombs of Sultan Suleiman's parents, as well as the tombs of Hatice Sultan and Shah Sultan.
Selim I, nicknamed Yavuz, was the ninth sultan of the Ottoman Empire. He was born in 1465 and reigned from 1512 until his death in 1520. Selim was preceded by his father, Bayezid II the Saint, and succeeded by his son, Suleiman I the Magnificent. During the lifetime of his father, Sultan Bayezid, Selim served as the Ottoman Empire's viceroy of the Balkans. To obtain the title of sultan, he had to outrank two of his brothers. Any means were used, and in 1511, Selim even rebelled against his own father. However, he was unsuccessful and fled to the Crimean Khanate. Surprisingly, a year later, Bayezid himself abdicated in favor of Selim, removing his two remaining sons from power.
Selim I died suddenly, at the age of 54, in the city of Edinna, while preparing military campaigns in Rhodes and India. Causes of death have been suggested as plague, anthrax, cancer, and even poisoning. The next sultan was Suleiman I, nicknamed the Magnificent. On the territory of the mosque there are also the graves of the parents of the Sultan, father Suleiman Yavuz Sultan Selim, mother Valide Sultan Ayse Hafza and sisters Hatice Sultan, Shah Sultan, Havize Sultan and the minors Sehzade Sultan Suleiman Sehzade Mahmud, Murad and Abdullah.
