Republican Senator Mitch McConnell has announced he will step down as party leader in November.

The Kentucky Senator, who turned 82 last week, will leave as the longest-serving Senate leader in history.

The minority leader says he plans to hold on to his seat in the chamber – his current term ending in 2027.

He announced his plans on the Senate floor, claiming he still has enough “gas in the tank” to continue proving his critics wrong.

Speculation about Mr McConnell’s political future has grown in recent months after freezing at a number of public appearances.
